Write a story about your childhood

If someone asks me about my childhood, I would say it was pretty fun days. I have been to many places over the world and met  a number of people including my friends. I love people and having time with them. However, since I had to move to many countries due to my parents business conditions, I sometime feel very lonely. When I was 2 years old I went to Egypt and I lived for almost 5 years. Egypt was nice country except that some criminals can seen easily around the city. After my father’s expatriate period was over, I came back to my country and started to attend korean education system. As I mentioned above, I love to spend time with people that it was not that hard to be used to korean system. However, even though I had a fun time with my little friends, I always felt a sense of lonely. I thought this symptoms were just a rite of passage that most of youth pass through. As a result, actually it was more than adolescence. It placed inside of my mind somewhere and came out unexpectively. It is my still sole chronic disease. After few years in my country, I had to expatriate again to the United States. To me it was nice chance for me to challenge and experience other culture. However, in my mind I did not want to go to new place. I was sick of repetting same courses again such as getting used to new language and understanding the diffrent foreginers way of life. There was no choice for me to stay in Korea because I was too young to say  ‘let’s stay in Korea’. So I abroad to United States again and nearly spent two years from third grades to fifth grades, and eventually came back to Korea. The period when I came back from United States was the hardest time ever amony my lifetime. I started to see everything negative and did not listened to elders’ advice. I did not study and have not done any of homework of all clases. At that time, nothing came to me as a fun stuffs. However, the only breakthrough was my friends.  Depression was my nemesis. It tried to ruin my life. So the only way to overcome that hardship was to always think positively. For example, if teachers assigned bunch of homework then I thought like this ‘ They are same person and they know how it is painful for students to do homework, but those homeworks are needed for us and that is why teahcers give us that amount of homeworks. I am still against the teachers who assigned a lot of homeworks.  After few years of spending in Korea, I faced another challenge. My father’s company ordered him to expatriate because of business. So I came to Turkey.

Aunt Alexandra is very much an antagonist towards Scout as she tries to impose her own views on ladylikeness and acceptable behavior onto Scout, and she wants Scout to be grown as a submissive woman such as Southern classic woman. We can found many examples from the novel.

For instance, one day scout visited Alexandra’s house with jeans, which was considered as a boyish thing at that time. After seeing Scout’s attire, she scolded at her to wear a cloth like a dress. She thought wearing clothes like jeans is damaging the prestige of Finch family.

Also, in the novel, Alexandra does not approve of Miss Maudie, who is nearly considered as a parent to Scout and Jem, staying in Atticus family’s household. This shows the Alexandra is antagonist clearly because she does not think any thankful and benign feelings to Miss Maudie, who raised Atticus children for a long time. She is kind of person who is very traditional and force others to follow her way.

Another example is that Aunt Alexandra does not think Atticus, who is Scout’s father,  is not desirable parent. She disagrees with the fact that Atticus lets Calpurnia take the freedom in the house to discipline the kids and also that Atticus speaks about blacks in front of her. She wants Atticus to teach the kids about the reputation of their family.

Today is my first day of writing a diary. Becasue I am always alone and I needed someone or somewhere to let them know about my routine and my story.

Many people dislike me and they do not call my name correctly. My real name is Arthur Radley and I am son of Mr.Radley, but people call me Boo Radley instead. I have not known why town people called me like that. But, now I know because they consider me as a monster , or a scarious creatures that hard to imagine.

Two days before I am not sure, but I think two or three kids sneaked into our garden and tried to do something to our house. I just pretended like I was sleeping. They used a fishing rod made of bamboo and tied some letter to it. I still do not know how they got bomboo because it is hard to get it in our town. Anyway, I did not check or catch the fishing rod since they might get really scared because of me. So I maintained my silence.  Actually, I was quite curious about what they were doing and, and I was about to go out and ask them if there are anything wrong about us. However, they left the place quickly so there is noway for me to communicate with them. My brother Nathan did not know it was little kids’ action so he brought his gun and shot fire blanks. After he shot fire blanks he came to me and asked what I saw. But, I lied to him to make those young peers not be scolded by their parents. After that happened, I found a pair of pants on the ground. I quickly grabbed it before anyone see it and brought to my room. I did not understand why there was neat pair of pants, and I found that there were few holes in the trouser ripped by steel wire. I did not know, but I just felt like I had to sew a hole in the trouser.

I think it was the first time that some white people came to our house and gave a try to communicate with us. Those kids are really courageous fellows. In my mind, I felt something thank you for them. If I have a chance to be closer with them, I would do my best.

In your notebook, write the next paragragph to the story in 1st person style from the perspective of the black man. Aim for ½ page of writting. (400words)

I can not understand what I did wrong to them. They called me as a hotnot. They thought they are superior than me and treated like a animal. I am glad that they did not kill me at least. I am sick of this community. I am a just a teacher and I have not done anything bad towards white coummunity. Also, they said they do not want any educated coloured man in their sociey. I thing this is because coloured people could get more power in the future by learning things. I knew that those four men would try to beat me up and make me afraid of them. I just did not want anything to happen to me. I followed what they told me to do. However, they started to strike me. I wanted to get out from that place and revenge to the white people who jeered at me. I did not need to wish to die and make the guy with the shotgun more angered. So I closed my mouth and did not relpy to their question. If I say I was not scary at those moments then that might be a lie. I do not remember whether I was shivering or not because of fear or cold. I was the only one that not warmly dressed. It is not the first time that white people have done this kinds of things to me. I already experienced this kind of several discrimination and violance. Few weeks ago, white men who were riding a car saw me and started to mock and hit me. I am sure that a world that coloured people get respect from other people will come someday. When I stared at the lantern, I felt something from it like a hope. I am a same man as white man. I am worried that this kind of violence would happen again, and if that happens there is no way for me to avoid from that situation. If there is a way then it might be bowing to them.

Interview an Immigrant about a language bill being passed in the U.S

Hyun Seok:  Hello, I am a high school student of MEF.  I am going to ask you a few questions about the language bill being passed in the U.S. Before I start my question, can you introduce yourself?

Mr. B: Yeah sure, I immigrate in summer time in July 24th 1986, because at that time I can move from Poland as a teacher, just for vacation.

Hyun Seok: Do you still teach students in states?

Mr.B: yes, and that is because I  thought teaching students was the only suitable job for me.

Hyun Seok: Thank you for introducing yourself. First of all, did you know that the congress just passed the bill that making English as an official language?

Mr.B: Yes, it is pretty shocking news. When I first came to United States, I had to pass immigration test which evaluates the level of new immigrants’ english abilities. After that exam, no one actually foced me to learn English. However, I had to learn English to get a better place to work.

Hyun Seok: Do you support the bill or not?

Mr.B: My answer for that question is No. I am against the bill. Language is not just a tool that uses to communicate with others. It is a accumulation of culture and represents the indentity of individuals. In other words, compelling immigrants to learn English is taking away their freedom and infringing the rights to choose their own identity.

Hyun Seok:  United States is the unique country that nearly 40 percent of population came from aborad which means they are not white americans, and some of them such as Hispanic still do not know how to speak English. In this case, the government thought they need something to gather amercians into one group. Do you think a languge can unite people?

Mr.B: Since a language is a powerful weapon to unite people, many countires have used for a long time. However, as I mentioned above, peculiarity of Untied States is the imoportant part that we have to think about. I think France is suitable example for this question. France does not have an official language even if their nation is consist of a number of immigrants. Instead of making official language, the used other methods such as arts to combine people.  These are my reasons why I can not support the bill.

Hyun Seok: Thank you so much for taking the time to talk to me today.

H.W 15/09/2012 English

A common language is the most powerful unifying force known throughtout history

Language has played a significant role in Humans history. Sometimes even  countries utilize the potent weapon ‘language’ to dominated their new colonies.

As I mentioned above, language’s function is more than just one way of communicating each other. For instance, these days a number of people use English, and in some countries people who know how to speak English earns more money than others who are not able to speak English.

Also, language was the best tools to gather people despite of their nationalities and cultures. Old chinese kingdoms and United states might be the best example for my idea. The priority work when old chinese kingdoms conquered other country was instilling their language into their knew colonies. After finishing this work, everything goes smoothly such as people becoming completely new citizen even if the dominated country had maintained their culture for a long time.  Another good example is the Untied States. Vientnam did not use English as their first lanuage before the WW2. However, after the World War Second they changed their systems in education and politics.  In my opinion, different conutires has their own best way of systems because surroundings and many other factors are diffrent with other countries. But, since their language changes, they become another citizen unofficially.

Few days before in my English class we had a class about the offical language of U.S government. Since the U.S is the country that mingled with various people, language comes to them as a big concern. However, the thing that I want to say is that if the U.S government want to keep their power and global rank over the world, they should maintain their lanugage English as much as possible, because the country like the USA’s root came from the lanuage ‘English’.
